There are a few tips and tricks when working with multi color designs in Cricut Design Space.
First, if you are importing a design, like this
Sleigh Hair Don't Care design, be sure to import as an SVG to get your multi colors. Then, you will have something that looks like the following image once your file is in design space.
See those layers on the right hand side? Each of those is a different piece and each color will cut from a different mat.
Click “Make It” to see your mats.
You can scroll down to see that each mat is a different color with different pieces on each.
The first tip for cutting multi-color designs in Cricut Design Space is if there is a piece that you want to move to a different color. Click the piece and you will see a button with three dots (...) appear.
Click that and you are given the option to move that piece to another mat.
Just click the mat you want to move it to and click Confirm.
Here I moved my piece to the red mat to make it the same color as the sleigh.
Note that you may have to move the piece around on the mat to ensure it is not overlapping another piece.
Alternately, you can also change the color mat a piece is on from the Layers menu on your canvas. Click the piece and choose another color to move it to another mat.
Another issue you may have when working with Cricut Design Space and multi color files is that the software moves your pieces around when you go to cut them. The software is designed to maximize your material unless you tell it differently.
Perhaps you don’t want your pieces to move so they are easier to line up together later. Click the pieces or layers that should remain in place (in this case the green ones) while holding down the Control button on your computer.
When all are selected, right click and choose “Attach”.
Now when you go to cut the mat will look like the below.
Alternately, if you do not attach the two pieces, the mat will look like the below.
